EndNote: Styles, filters and connection files

Output styles

Filters

Some databases require a specific Endnote filter in order to export.

What are output styles, filters and connection files?

Output styles: tell Endnote what style your references will be displayed in

Filters: tell Endnote how to import reference details into your Endnote library

Connection files: allow Endnote to connect to and download references from online catalogues and other websites (also called Online search)

Where can I get more files?

How do I add these files to Endnote?

For each Endnote output style, filter or connection file:

  • Make sure you have Endnote installed on your computer
  • Click on the link to the file that you want to add
  • A download window will appear: choose Open
  • The file will open in the Endnote program
  • Choose File then Save as
  • A window will appear: remove the word 'copy' from the end of the file name
  • Click Ok
  • Close the Endnote program

To use the new file simply select it as you would other output styles, filters and connection files in Endnote.

Using more than one computer? You will need to follow the steps above on each computer that you use with Endnote.

Getting an error 'file does not exist'? Head to Preferences and 'Folder Locations' and update the directory to point towards 'Styles' in your computer's Documents folder.
