EndNote for Mac: macOS Catalina Compatibility
Apple will be releasing macOS 10.15 Catalina this fall (September-October). Since, Apple has made the decision to drop all 32-bit application support, we expect that macOS 10.15 Catalina will not run EndNote X8 and earlier version. Please consider to update your latest EndNote (ENdNote X9) if you are using EndNote X8 or earlier version. More info: What do Mac users need to do?
Please use the latest versions of Microsoft Word 2016 and EndNote X9, to ensure compatibility. Endnote X8 is compatible with Mac OS10.14.3 and Microsoft Word for Mac (version 16.21.1 or later).
You can update to the latest version of Word 2016 for Mac from the University of Sydney at this link: Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus.
EndNote works with Pages and you should find all the tools necessary to insert citations under the Insert menu item, and the edit functions under the Edit menu item.
If you cannot see the EndNote tools in Pages, you may need to download the EndNote plugin for Pages from the Apple support website.
Follow the instructions for Direct Export under the Collecting References tab. When the file downloads, on a Mac you usually need to point your browser to the EndNote application.
Using Safari as your browser:
1. When the file has exported, the Downloads list appears. If it doesn't, open it manually:
For OS X 10.7 (Lion), click the Show Downloads button at the top right-hand corner of the Safari window as in the image below.
For OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) choose Window > Downloads.
The file name will usually refer to the database platform from which you did Direct Export.
3. Drag and drop the downloaded file onto the EndNote icon on the Dock. EndNote will open and prompt you to select a library in which to import the references in the file. Click Open and EndNote will import the references.
4. Alternatively, click the magnifying glass beside the file name to Show in Finder. (If you click the file name, Safari will try and fail to open the file). Double-click on the downloaded file > Choose Application.
5. Next, select the EndNote folder from the Applications menu, > EndNote > click Open. If your EndNote library is already open the citation will be imported automatically. If not, you will be prompted to select a reference library.
Using Firefox as your browser
If using Firefox, you need to open EndNote before Direct Exporting any references. Otherwise, Firefox may prompt you to navigate to EndNote on your Mac via Open with > Choose > Applications > EndNote.
