Anthropology: Professional organisations

The World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA) is a network of national and international associations that aims to promote worldwide communication and cooperation in anthropology. It aims to: Promote the discipline of anthropology in an international context; Promote cooperation and the sharing of information among world anthropologists; Promote jointly organized events of scientific debate and cooperation in research activities and dissemination of anthropological knowledge.

ISISA is a voluntary, non-profit and independent organisation. Our objectives are to study islands on their own terms, and to encourage free scholarly discussion on small island related matters such as islandness, smallness, insularity, dependency, resource management and environment, and the nature of island life.

The IUAES is a world organization of scientists and institutions working in the fields of anthropology and ethnology, but also of interest to archaeologists and linguists, among others. Its aim is to enhance exchange and communication among scholars of all regions of the world, in a collective effort to expand human knowledge. In this way it hopes to contribute to a better understanding of human society, and to a sustainable future based on harmony between nature and culture.

Founded in 1902, the American Anthropological Association (AAA) was formed "to promote the science of anthropology, to stimulate and coordinate the efforts of American anthropologists, to foster local and other societies devoted to anthropology, to serve as a bond among American anthropologists and anthropologic[al] organizations present and prospective, and to publish and encourage the publication of matter pertaining to anthropology"

The professional association for social anthropology in Southern Africa

The ASA was founded in 1946 to promote the study and teaching of social anthropology, to present the interests of social anthropology and to maintain its professional status. Its aim is to assist in any way possible in planning research, to collate and publish information on social anthropology and to function as a register of social anthropologists.

CASCA aims to: provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among anthropologists and to encourage formal and informal dissemination of knowledge through conferences and publications; promote relations with other academic and professional associations, aboriginal groups, and governments; and to publicize anthropological research and activities to further understanding of ethnological practices

EASA is a professional association open to all social anthropologists either qualified in, or else working in, Europe. It is a society of scholarship and aims to improve understanding of world societies by promoting professional communication and cooperation between European social anthropologists.

The SAE is the section of the American Anthropological Association that promotes the anthropological study of European societies and cultures.

The Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland (RAI) is the world's longest-established scholarly association dedicated to the furtherance of anthropology (the study of humankind) in its broadest and most inclusive sense.

The Australian Anthropological Society represents the anthropologists of Australia. The goals of the Society are to promote the advancement of anthropology as a professional discipline, to promote its responsible use in the service of humankind, and to promote professional training and practice in anthropology.

ASAO is an international organization dedicated to comparative studies of Pacific topics. ASAO is committed to providing a forum in which Pacific Islanders can fully participate, they encourage members to return information to the island communities from which they obtained it, in forms appropriate to and usable at the village level.

The Association of Social Anthropologists of Aotearoa/New Zealand was established to provide the framework for maintaining contact among social anthropologists and to support the publication and dissemination of research in social anthropology

SEAA is committed to developing international channels of communication among anthropologists throughout the world. We hope to promote discussion and share information on diverse topics related to the anthropology of Taiwan; PRC; Hong Kong; Japan; Korea; other societies/cultures of Asia and the Pacific Basin with historical or contemporary ties to East Asia; transnational linkages between East Asian and other societies/cultures; and diasporic societies/cultures identified with East Asia.

The Center for Pacific Islands Studies, in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Pacific and Asian Studies, is both an academic department and a larger home for initiatives that bring together people and resources to promote an understanding of the Pacific Islands and issues of concern to Pacific Islanders

The JASCA (Nihon Minzoku Gakkai) is one of the largest anthropological organizations in the world. The JASCA's main purpose is to promote research on human culture(s) in ethnology, cultural anthropology and social anthropology.

The Indian Anthropological Association (IAA) is the representative body of the professional anthropologists in India. It focuses on the understanding of the diversity and variations that the Indian society, culture and population exhibit, without ignoring the important findings of the world of anthropology. It seeks to provide a platform to anthropologists and those working on allied disciplines, to promote interest and encourage research through publications, seminars and conferences.
