New Titles at Badham and Camden Libraries

Selected new books below - or choose to view all new titles for the current month.

  • Animal ethics (2005) - Robert Garner.
Call Number: Badham and Fisher 179.3 103
This book is an attempt to lead the way through the moral maze that is our relationship with nonhuman animals. Written by an author with an established reputation in this field, the book takes the reader step by step through the main parameters of the debate, demonstrating at each turn the different positions adopted. In the second part of the book, the implications of holding each position for the ethical permissibility of what is done to animals - in laboratories, farms, the home and the wild - are explained. Garner starts by asking whether animals have any moral standing before moving on to assess exactly what degree of moral status ought to be accorded to them. It is suggested that whilst animals should not be granted the same moral status as humans, they are worthy of greater moral consideration than the orthodox animal welfare position allows. As a result, it is suggested that many of the ways we currently treat animals are morally illegitimate. In the final chapter, the issue of political praxis is tackled. How are reforms to the ways in which animals are treated to be achieved? This book suggests that currently dominant debates about insider status and direct action are less important than the question of agency. That is, the important question is not what is done to change the way animals are treated as much as whom is to be mobilised to join the cause. Students of philosophy, politics and environmental issues will find this an essential textbook.
  • Animals, emotion & morality : marking the boundary (2008) - B.A. Dixon.
    Call Number: Badham 591.5 191
Do some animals have "morally laden" emotions? Dixon examines various arguments in favor of this idea and finds them lacking. Each chapter begins with an animal story or anecdote to illustrate the theme to be covered.
  • BSAVA manual of practical veterinary nursing (2007) - edited by Elizabeth Mullineaux and Marie Jones
    Call Number: Badham 636.089073 30
This practical accompaniment to the more theoretical BSAVA Textbook of Veterinary Nursing, Fourth Edition ('Jones's') has been completely revised to reflect to the advances in veterinary nursing. The layout lends itself to ease of use in day-to-day practice and provides useful information for many situations. It will help any nurse to make improvements in their daily nursing of animals and the care and service they provide to their owners.
  • Saunders comprehensive review for the NAVLE (2009) - Patricia Schenck.
    Call Number: Badham 636.089076 8
This volume consists of review material covering all the areas on the NAVLE. The text is arranged by animal species with additional sections on Basic Sciences, Practice Management, and Public Health. The accompanying CD-ROM contains two practice tests.
  • The dog : its behavior, nutrition, and health (2005) - Linda P. Case
    Call Number: Badham 636.7 66
In this compendium of facts about the creatures who have captured the hearts of almost half of all American households, Case (animal science and behavior, U. of Illinois) addresses the history of canine domestication, selective breeding, body structure, reproduction, genetics, benefits and responsibilities of the owner, developmental behavior and learning processes, common behavior problems, infectious diseases and noninfectious disorders, parasites, first aid, nutrition, and nutritiously responsive disorders. The best news is that dogs do not need a manual like this. They already know us inside and out.
  • Equine wound management (2008) - edited by Ted S. Stashak and Christine Theoret.
    Call Number: Badham 636.108971 2 A
Management of wounds of the head, body and distal extremities, including those of the foot region are all discussed and well illustrated in this hands-on clinical guide to managing wounds in the foal and adult horse.
