What Is EndNote?

Get started with EndNote

To start using EndNote, you will first need to download and install the program. Follow the links to the left.

Save the file to your computer, and then run that file to install the program. Accept the default installation paths, and after a few minutes, EndNote will be installed and ready to go.

If you are upgrading from a previous version of EndNote, it is advisable to back up your libraries, any modified output styles, and uninstall the old version of EndNote prior to installing the new version.

If you use a Mac, ensure that you have the most recent patches and updates installed for your version of Word. You can download these patches here.

If EndNote doesn't work properly in the first instance, check the EndNote Support Forums.

If EndNote is still not working correctly, contact your Faculty Liaison Librarian for further assistance.

Sharing Endnote Library attachments with others

Due to the variety of copyright and licensing restrictions that can apply to the redistribution of published material, it can be difficult to determine whether or not each individual attachment in an EndNote library can be shared with others. For this reason the library advices that the safest course of action for you is not to share or distribute EndNote Libraries containing attachments with someone from another institution which does not subscribe to the same databses.

You are still able to share your EndNote Libraries without attachments with collaborators outside the University (see below instructions). You may also talk to your Faculty Liaison Librarian.

How to save an EndNote Library without attachments:

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Click on File then choose Compressed Library
  • When the compressed library window opens choose the Without File Attachments option along with any other settings you wish
  • Save the compressed version of the library to your chosen drive
  • If you need to send the compressed EndNote Library via e-mail, attach it as you would any other file

If you are upgrading from a previous version of EndNote, it is advisable to back up your libraries, any modified output styles, and uninstall the old version of EndNote prior to installing the new version.

Endnote Web

Working collaboratively?

Want to access your library from multiple locations, and not worry about having multiple copies of your EndNote Library?

Want others to be able to see the references you've gathered over time?

Why not try EndNote Web!

Endnote Classes

You can book yourself in to an EndNote class through the online class booking system.

If no class time is suited to your needs, you can arrange a research consultation with your Faculty Liaison Librarian to go through EndNote.
