Vital Government Agencies

These are the crucial government agencies which have an impact on the teaching environment.

  • ACARA: Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority  
    The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is responsible for a national curriculum K to 12 in specified learning areas, a national assessment program, a national data collection and reporting program supporting analysis, evaluation, research, resource allocation as well as accountability and reporting.
  • NSW Dept of Education and Training (DET)  
    The DET is responsible for Primary, Secondary and Vocational Education through public schools and TAFE colleges throughout NSW, educating the bulk of school students and employing the majority of teachers across all sectors
  • NSW Board of Studies (BOS)  
    The Board of Studies sets the core curriculum, developing syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 12 and provides support materials for teachers. It also manages both the HSC and the School Certificate.
  • NSW Institute of Teachers  
    The Institute is responsible for assessing teachers’ professional capacity through qualifications against professional teaching standards, and accrediting all those teachers who wish to teach in NSW schools.
  • Teaching Australia: Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership  
    Funded by the Federal Government, Teaching Australia's activities include national profession-wide standards, professional learning and leadership development, research, skills assessment for migration, and ational awards.
  • Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations  
    The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is the government agency responsible for education and workplace training, transition to work and conditions and values in the workplace.
  • Australian Government Quality Teaching Programme  
    The AGQTP was established in 2000 to raise the quality, professionalism and status of Australian teachers and school leaders.
  • Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA)  
    established on 1 July 2009 following agreement of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to a realignment of the roles and responsibilities of two previously existing councils—the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) and the Ministerial Council for Vocational and Technical Education (MCVTE).
