Factiva

1. What is Factiva?

Factiva is a database covering news and media publications. It has a powerful free-text search engine, reliant on the use of Boolean operators and/or/not (Search Builder) and a more basic ‘Google-like’ search (Simple Search).

2. How to find Factiva.

·         Go to the Nursing and Midwifery Databases page (http://www.library.usyd.edu.au/databases/nursing.html)

·         Scroll down until you find Factiva.com

Example search #1 – (above)

·         nurses and pay and Australia (you need to type in the Boolean operator ‘and’ in this database)

·         Limits are articles from the last 2 years, and headline/lead paragraph (More Options).

·         This is searching for nurses, pay and Australia in the Headline or first paragraph.

7. Example search #2 – (below)

·         nurs* and (pay or wage* or salar*)

·         Limits are Australia as a region, articles found in the last 2 years and searching in the Headline and Lead Paragraph (rather than the full text of the article)

Search tips

·         * is a used for truncation (eg nurs*will retrieve nurse, nurses, nursing)

8. Saving your search

·         Due to the way Factiva is accessed at the university, it is not possible to save your search within Factiva. You can save the results by emailing them to yourself.

·         To email the results

o   First, before you choose any results or look at full text, click on the Frames link.  This will allow you to copy your search history (Search Preview) from the right-hand side of the screen (this will put it in your clipboard, ready for the next step)

o   Select the articles of interest by ticking the checkboxes

o   Select the Envelope icon at the top left (2nd icon along)

o   Enter an email address (see illustration on next page)

o   Paste your Search Preview into the Add a Message box

o   Select Send to email it to that address.

Alternatively can use the Simple Search, which is more like a Google search (doesn't require and/or/not)

·         click on Simple Search at the top left of the page

·         choose Group: Australian Sources.

·         Type in your keywords and choose the date range (e.g. last 2 years) and click on Run Search

When finished, be sure to press Logout in the top right corner.
