Boolean Searching on Databases

In order to make your search more efficient, use Boolean search operators:

AND
OR
NOT


'AND' - use this to combine two or more search terms, to find articles that contain all of the search terms in the same article.

'OR' - use this to find all of the articles related to two or more search terms. This search will include the articles that contain all of the terms, but it will also find articles that relate to each search term seperately.

'NOT' - use this search operator to not include articles about a certain term.

For example: If you wanted to do a search for exercise-related asthma, and not cardiac asthma, you would use the Boolean search operators:

 

Example #2: If you wanted to find all of the articles on Type I diabetes and Type II diabetes, you would use the following.
Note that this search will include those articles that refer to Type I and Type II diabetes in the same article.
