Systematic Reviews: Formulating Searchable Question

PICO - Constructing a clinical question

Build a good clinical question to facilitate searching for a precise answer.

Structure of a clinical question:

  • Population/Disease – Who is the problem/disease affecting? For what group do you need information?

  • Intervention - What is the treatment/intervention? What is the suspected exposure? (Study factor)
  • Comparator - What is the treatment or exposure being compared to? No treatment (often the Control), or a different type of treatment?
  • Outcome - What is the effect of the treatment/intervention? (Outcome factor) How will you measure it?
