EndNote: Getting Started

Get started with EndNote

To start using EndNote, you will first need to download and install the program. Follow the link in the Quick Links box to the right.

Save the file to your computer, and then run that file to install the program. Accept the default installation paths, and after a few minutes, EndNote will be installed and ready to go.

If you are upgrading from a previous version of EndNote, it is advisable to back up your libraries, any modified output styles, and uninstall the old version of EndNote prior to installing the new version.

If you use OS X, ensure that you have the most recent patches and updates installed for your version of Word. Update Word from the menu item Help - Check For Updates.

If EndNote doesn't work properly in the first instance, check the EndNote Support Forums.

If EndNote is still not working correctly, contact your Academic Liaison Librarian for further assistance.

Follow the links in the Quick Links box to the right for short instructional videos on using Endnote for Windows or Mac.

MacOS Users

If you are a Mac user, please note that Microsoft Word 2016 for Mac (version 15.17 and above) is not automatically compatible with EndNote X7 and earlier versions of  Word 2016 for Mac are not compatible with Endnote.

Once you have downloaded Endnote X7 onto your computer, run it and update the program to X7.7 for Macs when prompted or by clicking on the Endnote Menu and Checking for Updates.

You can update to version 15.19.1 of Word 2016 for Mac from the University of Sydney at this link: Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus

Please note that there may be compatibility issues with MacOS Sierra. Endnote advises against updating to Sierra until a fix is released. You can find out more information here.
